Largest Container Vessel with Nearly 10,000 Teus Berths at Onne Port
One of the largest container vessels has berthed at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT), Onne in Rivers State.
The vessel, Maerskline Stardelhorn, is of 300 metres and width of 48 metres, and remains the largest container vessel to berth in Nigerian ports.
It has 9,971 (TEUs), and a flagship of Singapore.
Managing Director of NPA, Ms. Hadiza Bala-Usman, who received the vessel said it was the determination of the authority to make eastern ports attractive to shippers.
Usman who was represented at the ceremony the Assistant General Manager Harbours, Captain Uduiguomen Eboreime, said it took the authority five days to prepare for the berthing of the vessel which came from the neighbouring port of Cotonou.
The Onne Port Manager, Mr. Alhassan Abubakar said the arrival of the vessel was a major milestone.
He said, “I give kudos to NPA MD. She made this ‘landmark/achievement today possible. This is the first time such a gigantic container vessel is calling at any Nigerian Ports,“
“We deployed three TUG Boats with three pilots from Onne Port Complex, and for us, the successful arrival of this vessel showcased the expertise of NPA’s ports operations”.
According to him, the arrival of the port was a kind of trial, assuring the port has all the needed facility to receive the vessel.
The vessel, he said came from Fairway Bouy Bonny by three pilots from NPA who are trained experts on pilotage.
The Assistant Harbour Master Onne Port, Captain Marvin Omovbude, led Ezra Yashiyi Yakubu and Abdulahi Sarki to pilot the vessel to Onne Port.
Omovbude said the vessel arrived safely without any security challenges of any type, adding that the security status of Onne Channel has improved tremendously.
He also said the channel depth has also been improved and can receive such large modern vessels.
