Aniebonam Faults APMT Boss on Cause of Congestion at Ports
*Commends NSC for ports regulatory efforts
*Urges council to deploy its powers to enforce compliance at ports
Founder, National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, Thursday faulted the new Country Manager for the APMT Terminals, Klaus Laursen, for saying that freight forwarders were responsible for the congestion at Apapa ports.
Laursen had in response to concerns raised by the ports economic regulator, the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) about increasing congestion in the terminal attributed this to the freight forwarders not coming to clear their containers.
He added that this has led to backlog of vessels waiting to be attended to in the territorial waters.
But Aniebonam in reaction told newsmen that the new Country Manager was yet to understand the workings of the Nigerian ports.
Lamenting about system collapse in the ports, the founder said this was why freight forwarders have been encountering a lot of difficulties in clearing their goods.
Aniebonam accused the terminal operators and the shipping companies of frustrating stakeholders in the ports and getting away with it.
He tasked the new Country Manager to first understand the nation’s maritime industry before making certain statements.
He invited the APMT boss to pay courtesy calls to his association and Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) to be briefed on what is happening in the ports.
Aniebonam commended the NSC management for every effort being made to address certain issues at the ports.
He however urged the Council to deploy their powers to compel service providers to comply with regulations.
According to him, this will check default in the system by service providers.
