Customs Intercepts COVID-19 Vehicle Used in Smuggling Frozen Chicken

*Records N12.7bn seizures in four months
A vehicle with COVID-19 sticker used in smuggling frozen chicken into the country has been intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service.
This was disclosed by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Customs Tuesday which announced four months seizures of items which duty paid value were put at N12.7billion.
The Public Relations Officer of the unit, Jerry Attah, told newsmen in Lagos that the vehicle was arrested at Ijedu Ode Express road.
Attah who spoke on behalf of the Controller of the Unit, Mr Usman Yahaya, said the arrest was based on intelligence by patrol officers, adding that the vehicle had been prepared to deceive many that it was used for movement of commodities.
He also disclosed that the Unit seized contraband goods worth N12,7bn between January and April.
He identified the items seized as 25 units of fairly used vehicles which estimated value were put at N108million, 5,644 cartons of frozen chicken valued at N54.1million, 9,843 bags of 50kg parboiled rice valued at N130.4m and textile materials valued at N94m.
Among the seized items were used tyre worth N14m, 3,764 kegs of vegetables oil valued at N69.2 million, 8,365 litres of PMS and Diesel worth N35million.
He said that the command will continue in the fight against anti-smuggling for the sake of protecting the economy.
