COVID-19: Lockdown Triggers Security Issues, as Hoodlums Attack Lagos Residents
* Residents of Idimu, Ejigbo, Ikotun, others now live under fear
*As IGP orders deployment of intervention team
The continued lockdown announced by the federal government over the coronavirus pandemic has become a big security issue for residents of Idimu and Ejigbo in Alimosho Local government Area of Lagos.
In the past two days, residents of the areas have been attacked by hoodlums who were in their large numbers and moved from street to street.
The hoodlums were armed with guns and cutlasses.
First, the attack started in Ikotun area, before another group surfaced in Idimu area where they were harassing residents found on Idimu-Ejigbo road.
As at Monday evening, the hoodlums took over the major roads in Idimu-Ejigbo where they attacked people found around.
The hoodlums had threatened to carry out house to house attacks in Silva Estate forcing youths in the estate to organize vigilante groups to protect residents.
It was gathered that the report to the Police by Landlords in the estate and the security measures adopted by youths in the estate were what stopped the hoodlums from carrying out their planned attack against residents.
Following this, residents have remained in fear as the hoodlums are said to be bent on carrying out house to house attack in search of money and food items.
It would be recalled that some residents in iju-Ishaga, Alagbado, Abule-Egba, Sango, Ifo, Agege-Pen Cinema, Dopemu, Iyana-Ipaja area, and Gowon Estate were also attacked some days ago.
The hoodlums were confronted by members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and some local vigilante.
However, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had in Monday directed that the Police Mobile Force, PMF, Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad, FEDSARS, Intelligence Response Team, IRT, and the Special Tactical Squad, STS, should be deployed to Lagos and Ogun to check the hoodlums.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba, who said that the Intervention Team would be coordinated by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Babatunde Ogunyanwo.
