We Shall Do Everything Possible Not to Fail, NIMASA DG Assures Maritime Industry Stakeholders
The new Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, Thursday assured that he with his management team will do everything not to fail in repositioning the maritime industry.
Jamoh spoke when he met with key industry stakeholders at a reception in Eko Hotel in Lagos.
Noting that the task of repositioning the sector was not an easy one, the NIMASA DG called for synergy and support among industry stakeholders for him to succeed.
He assured that he will do everything within the statutory obligations of the agency to meet the yearnings of the stakeholders.
He said, “We have our own mandate. We need your assistance and support to be able to actualise this mandate. Your support, understanding and guidance are always going to be our watchword. I cannot do it alone. Join me and support me to get these things right to reposition the agency for the betterment of us all. I assure you we will do everything possible not to fail you.”
Industry stakeholders who among them included the Chairman, Integrated Oil and Gas Limited, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho, President, Nigerian Shipowners Association (NISA), Aminu Umar, Chairman, Shipowners Forum, Barrister (Mrs.) Magret Onyema-Orakwusi, Chairman Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN), Princess (Dr.) Vicky Hasstrup, among others while congratulating Jamoh in his new appointment wished him well.
Iheanacho in his speech described Jamoh’s appointment as what the industry stakeholders had prayed for that somebody from this system who understands the industry should be appointed.
He believes that this will have a way of adding more value to the industry as the sector will be properly positioned.
He called on Jamoh to consider focusing on areas of regulatory mandatory of NIMASA instead of revenue.
He also called on him to come up with guidelines for the disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) as very important to improve on indigenous shipping development.
Aminu Umar on the other hand called on Jamoh to focus on addressing the issue of piracy and other armed robbery on the nation’s waterways.
Umar also stressed the need for the new NIMASA DG to also focus on building indigenous shipping capacity.
He added, “One of the issues that have been on the front burner for shipping is piracy. We cannot discuss enough the damage that piracy is doing to us presently in all the sectors of the maritime industry. We will love the DG and his management to put this as their top priority and promote, protect the interest of indigenous shipowners.”
