Senate: Bill Proposes 10-Year Jail for Importers, Sellers of Generators
A bill which will stop importation and selling of generators in Nigeria is now before the Senate.
The bill passed the first reading in the Senate on Wednesday.
The bill is being sponsored by Senator Birma Enagi of Niger State who said it is meant to check issues of environmental pollution and ensure that the power sector is developed.
According to the Bill, anybody who imports and sells generators shall be guilty of the offence and if convicted shall be sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
The sponsor excluded generators in medical places such as hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities.
The bill also excludes airports, railways, elevators, escalators and research institutions from the offence.
