Two Vessels to Fight Piracy, Other Maritime Crimes Arrive Nigeria
Two vessels Tuesday arrived Nigeria as part of the fight against piracy and other related maritime crimes.
The two vessels, Mvs DB Lagos and DB Abuja were received by the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The two vessels are equipped with intelligence gathering capacity and can detect illegal activities for rapid response.
Executive Director of Operations, Rotimi Fashakin, who received the vessels on behalf of the Director General of NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside,said the two vessels will be deployed to address issues of piracy and other maritime crime in Nigeria’s waterways and Gulf of Guinea.
Dakuku disclosed that interceptor boats have also arrived Nigeria while seven more are expected later in the year.
He added that each of the interceptor boats has engine capacity of 900HP and can do up to 55knots.
He also said that vessels were part of the efforts to full operational takeoff of the deep blue project and a huge victory for the Nigerian maritime sector in the fight against maritime insecurity.
Chief Security Officer, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Muritala. Bashi, who represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok Ete- Ibas disclosed that officers to handle the vessels will be given adequate training.
Ete- Ibas described piracy as an act inimical to the growth of the Nigerian maritime sector, adding that the Navy was preparedto tackled the crime.
