The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, Tuesday disclosed that Nigeria lost as much as
$750 million to crude oil theft last year.

Kyari disclosed this while making a presentation to members of the Executive Intelligence Management Course 13 of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) who paid him a courtesy call.
In a statement by the Corporation’s acting spokesman, Samson Makoji, Kyari expressed concerns over the activities of oil thieves and pirates in the country.
He said this has become a big threat to NNPC’s operations and the survival of Nigeria as a country.
Kyari said this was because of the role oil pays in the nation’s economy.

He also identified vandalisation of facilities and kidnapping as part of the problem being faced in the country.

He also pointed out insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea and the entire maritime industry as big challenge for Nigeria’s economy.

Kyari appealed for synergy to secure oil and gas facilities for Nigeria’s economic survival.
