With Staring Poverty, No Northern Leader Can Be Happy, Laments Sanusi
Former Central Bank Governor and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, Monday said no Northern leader from the North can be happy as a result of the level of poverty in the Northern region.
Sanusi spoke in Kaduna on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th birthday by the Governor, Mallam Nasir el Rufai.
The former CBN governor pointed out poverty, insecurity, almajiri, health and nutrition issues in the Northern region as very worrisome.
He said with such problem, no Northern leader can be happy.
Sanusi however praised el-rufai for devoting 40 percent of the state budget for education as part of the efforts to check illiteracy, poverty and insecurity.
According to Sanusi, the North was the worst in terms of poverty, out of school children and beggars.
He called on leaders from the zone to consider ways of reducing poverty so as to be in the same level with other regions in the country.
He warned, “If the North does not change the situation it is grappling with today, it will destroy itself. We need to get our northern youths to study harder, get the required educational qualifications to compete with Nigerians for jobs and other positions instead of relying on quota allocations. This is because the rest of the country may not wait for the north forever.’’
El-rufai’s 60th birthday celebration was attended by who is who in Nigeria’s political class.
