The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Muhammad Adamu Wednesday called on local government chairmen throughout the country to resort to community policing to protect lives and property instead of leaving everything to the Nigerian Police.
Speaking to newsmen after meeting the Senate, Adamu said he has already briefed the law makers on community policing as necessary to check insecurity.
According to him, “We met today and I briefed them on community policing. Last year, we sensitised the whole country on the need for community policing.
“The concept is to give policing back to the communities and let them take the initiative in identifying the challenges that can lead to crimes and then we work with the communities to handle the crime.
“What we are saying essentially with is that fighting crime should not be left to the law enforcement agencies alone.”
The Senate Preisdent, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, had summoned the IGP to brief the Upper chamber on the efforts of the Police to tackled the increasing insecurity in the country.
The Senate President said the lawmakers were in support of community policing and will pursue its implementation.
