No fewer than 188 motorcycles and 78 tricycles have been impounded by the Lagos State Police Command for contravening traffic laws banning them from operating in some routes in the state.
The Police also arrested 40 violators according to the Police Spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana.
Elkana told newsmen that that Commissioner of Police had deployed area and divisional traffic officers and the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences to enforce the ban which took effect February 1.
According to him, the enforcement was monitored by the CP himself who took part in arresting some offenders.
Elkana said the CP impounded 23 vehicles over traffic offences, among them VIP escort vehicles without registration numbers, vehicles with defaced and covered plate numbers and vehicles driving against traffic.
Areas affected by the ban include Ikeja, Eti Osa, Apapa, Lagos Mainland, Surulere and Lagos Island
The ban according to the state government was to check increasing crime rate in the state.
Following the ban, many passengers were stranded for hours as there were few commercial buses operating.
Those that were operating doubled their fares for seeing the number of passengers stranded at the bus stops.
