Traders, Landlords Count Losses as Fire Razes Two Buildings, Goods in Lagos Market
A fire incident Wednesday destroyed two buildings and several shops in Balogun market, Lagos Island.
A source said the fire incident was caused by an attendant who was refilling his generator when it was on leading to an explosion.
But another source said the fire was as a result of storage of fuel in front of at Oluwole Car Park on Martins Street.
Two buildings caved in and collapsed as a result of the effect of the fire incident.
This happened just as fire fighters battled to control the inferno.
A team of fire fighters from the Lagos State Fire, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Ports Authority, Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) and the Police battled the incident.
Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke –Osanyintolu said the incident was caused by poor storage of fuel in one of the buildings.
He said that though no life was lost, several goods were lost to the fire incident.
The Commissioner for Special Duties & lnter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Paul Bamgbose Martins and Acting Director of the state fire service, Mrs. Magaret Oluseye were also at the scene.
The fire incident became an opportunity for some hoodlums to steal some goods belonging to traders.
The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) had a hard time controlling the hoodlums.
Two members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society and a fire fighter sustained injuries following the collapse of two plazas.
They were immediately rushed to hospital for treatment.
It would be recalled that a similar fire incident that destroyed goods and other property had occurred in the market about a year ago.
