*Expresses optimism on reopening of borders before July Take-off for AfCFTA
Nigerian government and its neighbouring countries have been urged to go digital by deploying technology to monitor their borders.
President of the Africa Export-Import Bank, Prof Benedict Oramah who spoke in Johannesburg, South Africa during the second edition of the African Investment Forum said this was the way to go as is the case in advanced countries.
Oramah expressed optimism that the issues leading to the closure of the borders would have been resolved before the take-off of African Continental Free Trade Area in July 2020.
He said this was necessary as the AfCFTA project will create one market in Africa.
According to him, this has a way of helping the different economies of participating countries.
According to him, “Trade deals on AfCFTA will start July 1, 2020. Nigeria will resolve its border challenges before then. Nigeria has signed the agreement and will not take the agreement lightly. Even in marriages, there can be challenges. The border closure is a temporary measure.
“Africa consists of 55 fragmented markets. AfCFTA will create one market in Africa. Unless we turn it to one market, the continent will remain underdeveloped”.
