Bill Gates, Dangote Express Concerns over Effect of Climate Change on Africa
World philanthropist. Mr Bill Gates and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote have expressed concerns about the effect of climate change on Africa.
Gates and Dangote who spoke Africa Centre said climate change has become a big hindrance to business opportunities in the African continent.
According to Gates Africa is where there will be toughest challenges as a result of climate change
He noted that this was sad, since Africa had the least to do to cause climate change.
He added that the actual difficulties will first be felt by the farmers of Africa.
According to THISDAY report, the philanthropist asked “Why is the continent where the availability of the labour is the highest, where the availability of land is the highest, where the production per hectare is the lowest, why can’t it move not only to be self-sufficient but also to be a net exporter?”
Dangote however spoke on Africa’s growing wealth, adding that the continent remains among the fastest growing economies in the world.
He said the continent has a lot of potentials which if properly managed can lift it to an enviable height.
According to him, “Today when you look at it you are thinking about the five fastest-growing economies in the world – four are in Sub Saharan Africa.
Another entrepreneur, Mo Ibrahim pointed that the problem in the continent has remained the issue of stereotype corruption.
Ibrahim said, “Let’s be frank, there is a lot of minds in the West here – people think Africa is a very corrupt place. Corruption is a problem a global problem. I don’t think it is an African problem”.
