Customs Inaugurates Two Gun Boats in War Against Smugglers
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Thursday inaugurated two gun boats as part of its plans to combat smugglers using waterways.
The two boats are named ‘Pride of Customs’ and ‘Group of Nine’ and will be deployed to comb the waterways used by smugglers.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Rtd Col Hameed Ali said that the two boats will strengthen the fight against smuggling on waterways.
Ali said the gun boats will help since smugglers resort to the use of waterways when confronted on the land.
Ali said some officers have died fighting smugglers, adding that it was in remembrance that one of the boats is named Group of Nine’.
“It is in honour of this group of nine gallant officers who died in the service of their fatherland that one of the seagoing vessels is named ‘Group of Nine’ while the other represents the ‘Customs Pride’ on the sea.”
He said the two boats are well equipped for firepower and long-time patrol on the water.
He said, “With these vessels, I hope smugglers will no longer take advantage of NCS vulnerability on water to smuggle in contraband. NCS Marine operatives can now sail to intercept them right on the high sea”.
