Nigeria Solicits Japan’s Support to Fight Piracy in Gulf of Guinea
The federal government Thursday solicited the support of the Japanese government in the fight against piracy in Gulf of Guinea (GoG).
President Muhammadu Buhari who made the request in Yokohama, Japan, during a bilateral meeting between the Nigerian delegation and Japanese officials led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also requested for help in the fight against illegal fishing in the GoG.
In a statement, the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Chief Femi Adesina said the President had commended the Japanese government for attending the June 12 Democracy Day in Nigeria and the invitation to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7).
The Prime Minister Abe commending Buhari for attending the event and for signing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
Abe had also commended the President for taking Nigeria to the Next Level.
He pledged $300,000 support for Nigeria’s Defence College and 12 million Yen for Nigeria’s public health sector.
Abe said he will support Nigeria’s Presidency of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, but also requested that Nigeria supports Japan to occupy some global positions.
As part of Thursday’s event, Nigeria and the European Union signed a €50 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support humanitarian and development efforts in the North East.
Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama and EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, signed the agreement.
The EU total support to the country is put at €562million for 2014-2020.
