Sanwo-Olu: I Did Not Promise to Salvage Apapa Gridlock Within 60 Days
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Tuesday denied that he promised to solve the Apapa gridlock within a space of 60 days on assuming office.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, the governor said it was surprising that some media houses have already started counting the days for him to solve the Apapa gridlock issue.
According to him, “ Some media houses have actually been counting down on me. They said that I mentioned during the campaign train that I was going to clear it in 60 days. I have mentioned it before; what I said was that in 60 days we would review what was done but that does not take the fact that even if people give you dateline, it’s because they want you to do well and they want you to be able to be accountable for those datelines.”
The governor however said the intervention of the federal government was one of the things he had to thank the President for during the visit for the Presidential Task Team.
He added, “ It’s a multifaceted challenge – there are different stakeholders that are involved in one way or the other – as operators, observers, practitioners and stakeholders in the entire Apapa gridlock and most of them are federal agencies in one form or the other. But it is we the citizens of Lagos state that are bearing the entire burden”
The governor however said the solution lies in the involvement of all stakeholders in a finding a final solution to the problem.
He noted that already Lilypond Terminal has been provided as trailer park with a manual call-up system, adding that the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) should introduced an electronic call-up system to be able to check the movement of trailers.
According to him, this way, the trailer drivers would be held responsible if they violate the traffic rules.
He said everyone connected with the ports , including the Police, LASTMA, shipping companies and terminal operators should complement each other’s efforts in finding a solution to the gridlock.
