446 Nigerians Languish in UAE Prisons
No fewer than 446 Nigerians are currently serving jail terms in United Arab Emirates (UAE), Nigeria’s ambassador, Mohammed Rimi has said.
Rimi told President Muhammadu Buhari during a town-hall meeting with Nigerians in the Emirate that the affected were serving different jail terms.
He also said that the offences range from possession of hard drugs to robbery operations.
The ambassador also said the total number of Nigerians living in UAE is put at 10,000 with 2,017 as students in various universities.
He disclosed that in the spirit of forgiveness, the UAE government had granted amnesty to all irregular residents in the country, numbering 5021 Nigerians.
According to him, “In 2018, a total of 5,774 standard passport were issued by the embassy, out of which, 3,164 were specifically issued during the amnesty programme. Further 1,346 emergency travelling certificates were issued to Nigerians to facilitate their return home.”
