SON Destroys N50m Substandard Tyres in Enugu
The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has destroyed substandard tyres which value was put at N50million in Enugu.
Director of Inspectorate and Compliance of the organization, Engr. Obiora Mbata said the products would be destroyed as a result of over-stuffing by importers.
The tyres, according to him were cleared at Port Harcourt and moved to Enugu.
He said the importers had stuffed most of the smaller tyres into big ones, adding that this has affected the standard and therefore dangerous for use by motorists.
He explained that stuffing causes a lot of invisible damage to the tyres.
Mbata said, “Stuffing will create a lot of dents and causes danger to the user and the owner. The position of the agency was to seize this kind of substandard product and destroy them. The products were intercepted when they are about to enter the country. That’s why I told you that we work in synergy with other sister agencies.
“If we confiscate we take them to the lab to check the standard, go to court and obtain a court order and whatever the court says will be carried out by the agency”.
He called on the importers to always strive to do the right thing to avoid losing their hard earned money.
