You Should Practise True Federalism, Yoruba Elders Tell Buhari
The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) weekend tasked President Muhammadu to embrace true federalism and ensure national unity during his second term in office.
Secretary-General of the group, Dr. Kunle Olajide, told newsmen that he has written to the President to ensure that with his victory he should implement El-Rufai’s committee report on restructuring.
Olajide said the President needs to also return the country to the era of revenue generation and not allocation sharing.
The YCE scribe who said he has received a that his letter will be looked into called on the President to ensure that each federating unit should be allowed to exploit and explore its resources.
He added, “They should then pay an agreed percentage to maintain few essential services in the centre such as defence, foreign affairs, immigration and customs services.”
The letter also called on the President to ensure that he gives priority to national unity so that all parts of the country were considered in appointments and projects.
He said “The president should ensure that his appointments reflect the diversity of Nigeria and in line with the Federal Character Principle enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
“We must ensure that people think of Nigeria before anything else, irrespective of tribe and religious affiliation. The president must ensure that he bequeaths a legacy of a United Nigeria”.
