Tanker Grounds in Greek Waters
WMN..A small clean tanker ran aground near the Port of Gavrio, Andros island in Greece, on March 16.
The 1,000 dwt Agios Georgios I grounded after it struck on rocks that knocked a small hole in the ship’s hull, Hellenic Coast Guard said.
At the time of the incident, Agios Georgios I was en route from Andros to the Port of Skyros with eight crewmembers and two passengers onboard. There were no injuries reported.
The ship was loaded with approximately 1,000 cubic meters of gasoline and diesel oil.
Although no oil spill has been detected so far, two anti-pollution barriers have been installed preventively.
In addition, a number of assets have been deployed to the area to monitor and prevent potential marine pollution and provide assistance in case the vessel starts taking on water.
A preliminary investigation into the incident has been launched.
The 1986-built ship is owned by Greece-based Amorgos Sea Transport Shipping, VesselsValue’s data shows. Reports World Maritime News.
