National Bureau of Statistics Says 30 Million Nigerians are Jobless
A report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Wednesday said 20.9 million Nigerians are jobless.
According to NBS, unemployment has been on steady rise, from 18.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2017 to 23.1 per cent this year.
The report also added that the number of persons in the labour force rose from 85.1million in the third quarter of last year to 90.5million in the third quarter of this year.
The report said among the 20.9million persons classified as jobless in the third quarter of 2018, 11.1million of them worked under 20 hours a week while 9.7million people were idle.
“Underemployment within the youth population (15-35 years) during the same quarter declined from 27.2 per cent in Q3, 2017 to 25.7 per cent in Q3, 2018.
“As of Q3 2018, 55.4 per cent of young people (15-34) were either underemployed or unemployed (doing nothing) compared to 52.6 per cent in the same period of the previous year.”
