INEC Chairman Says Politicians Hide Money in Bread to Buy Votes
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Monday expressed concerns over the latest tricks being used by politicians to buy votes.
Yakubu particularly said politicians now hide money in slices of bread on election days to buy votes.
“When I talk about sandwich we are not talking of bread but ways politicians induce voters by sandwiching naira notes in two slices of bread. I am talking of sandwich not as food but as tool used by politicians for voting exercise,”
Speaking during a one day public hearing on ‘Vote Buying and Improving Electoral Processes in Nigeria,” held at the National Assembly, the INEC chairman said this should be condemned.
He said, “Vote buying is not acceptable; it must never be allowed to define our elections. It is illegal and morally wrong. It denies citizens quality representation and gives us bad name internationally. It does not give us a good representation.”
The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, also expressed worry over the development, saying INEC should find a way to check such fraud.
Saraki called on the INCEC boss and other security agencies to ensure that the forthcoming election was free and credible.
